Why do I sometimes wear an eye patch?

Looking posh piratey with the beard and hip background
I do get it is confusing. I don’t always have the patch on .
Sometimes I have the patch on, sometimes it covers my eye.
Sometimes the patch is on my forehead. Sometimes it is in my pocket. Many have asked if it is a fashion or marketing gimmick. Pirates are all the rage theses days.
I would think the same as you.
I’m partially blind in my left eye. A tumor close to the optic nerve causes the retina to bulge like a stomach of a fat man on Thanksgiving. Freaky, as most tumors are talked of in the same category as cancer. Tumor is a fancy medical term for ‘strange bulge/growth/lump where there should be nothing.” My tumor just is an pointless abnormal vein growth.
As a result the focal point is uneven across my retina. Imagine looking through the top out the bottom of a clear soda bottle. Some parts are in focus but most are not. There is no known medical condition to label it. I’m even the star of a medical journal case study. An operation has been ruled out from the vein being so close to the optic nerve.
Thankfully it is not growing and there is nothing cancerous about it. My eye still functions somewhat, though it tires easily and gives me wicked headaches.
Here is where the eye patch comes in. I cover my eye and it takes a rest.
Yes, it is that simple.
In public I prefer to use both eyes. The peripheral vision in the left eye is 100% functional and it prevents me from turning into you and spilling your drink. Good for you and good for me. Who likes to pay for dry cleaning bills? You also look better in stereo vision. Trouble is I never know when my eye will become cranky and require a nap. Thus the eye patch comes out in mid conversation.
There is no secret society connotation, sub-textual message I’m more hip than you or I’m into LARPing past buccaneer days.
Kids and women dig it. It is what it is.
